One likely expected the Atelier Versace runway to comprised almost exclusively of red carpet gowns, but this season Donatella took things in a new direction. The Spring/Summer 2013 collection is dominated primarily by daywear. Pantsuits, skirts, and tuxedo jackets opened the show and remain a focal point of the collection. However, despite this shift in focus, no glamorous note was spared. Donatella delivered on the Versace promise of over-the-top opulence mixed in with bad-ass attitude. Gold detailing was used throughout the collection, giving a sharp Gladiator-inspired contrast to the darker pieces and a Grecian-inspired influence to the floating chiffon dresses. Jackets were given an over-exaggerated and boxy shape, yet didn’t spare the usual sex appeal of a Versace piece.
For evening, there was something to appease every kind of Versace woman. A series of very classically- inspired column gowns were updated with hints of neon, while powerful modern-day Versace gowns were shown in shiny black and dominated by sheer fabrics or shorter hemlines. The show closed with neon dresses accented with a shiny overlay and had a much softer, more playful feeling about them. It’s clear Donatella is expanding the boundaries of the Atelier collection and hopefully will continue with this theme come next season. Because really, what’s better than Atelier Versace for day and night?
